All five little girls were dressed in white – a startling contrast to the sombre black of the other mourners.Īmong the handful of royal guests was Friso's godfather, King Harald V of Norway, and his wife, Queen Sonja. Yesterday she led the procession on one side, with Princess Beatrix on the other, holding hands between them with Friso’s daughters, Luana (8) and Zaria (7).īehind them came Friso’s elder brother, King Willem-Alexander, his wife Queen Maxima, and their three young daughters. Prince Friso’s body had been accompaniedfrom Huis ten Bosch palace in The Hague, where he died, by Princess Mabel. They were forced to marry without the consent of parliament after it emerged that Princess Mabel – then Mabel Wisse Smit – had given "incomplete and incorrect information" to the Dutch government about her earlier relationship with drugs baron, Klaas Bruinsma, shot dead in 1991.Īfter their marriage, the couple moved to London where Prince Friso – known as ‘Prince Brilliant’ during his years as a graduate student at the University of California at Berkeley and at the prestigious INSEAD business school in France – became a vice-president at Goldman Sachs. The intimate nature of the family farewell was underlined by the fact that the funeral ceremony was performed by the Rev Carel ter Linden, the clergyman who married the couple in Delft in 2004 – amid a blaze of publicity over the decision of Friso – the brother of the new Dutch king – to gave up his right of succession to the Dutch throne. One can only imagine what Beatrix – and her family – are going through right now.The small cortege was gone in just seconds as the remains of Prince Friso of Orange-Nassau, the coffin covered in white flowers and accompanied only by his wife, Princess Mabel, arrived at his final resting place yesterday in the idyllic woodland village of Lage Vuursche in the Dutch province of Utrecht. Princess Juliana died in her sleep on 20 March 2004 at the age of 94. In 2001, she was no longer able to recognise her family. Her parents were Queen Wilhelmina’s only surviving child Princess Juliana and her husband, Prince Bernhard. She weighed eight pounds and was 52 centimetres long. From the mid-1990s, Juliana’s health deteriorated and she suffered from dementia. She was given the names Beatrix Wilhelmina Armgard, for both her grandmothers. In this case, the Queen is the presiding monarch, and Eugenie and Beatrice’s kids would be her great-grandchildren. Princess Juliana became Queen Juliana when her mother, Queen Wilhelmina abdicated in 1948, and she would reign until her own abdication in 1980. The son of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank, August, does not have a title. They went on to have four children together: Beatrix (1938), Irene (1939), Margriet (1943) and Christina (1947). Princess Beatrix’s parents, Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard first met at the 1936 Winter Olympics, and Princess Juliana fell deeply in love – even seeing past Prince Bernhard’s extramarital affairs, which produced several illegitimate children – and the pair were married on 7 January 1937. Prince Claus died on 6 October 2002 from Parkinson’s disease and heart failure at the age of 76. ![]() Nevertheless, he ended up becoming one of the most popular members of the Dutch Royal Family – winning hearts with his easy-going attitude. Their engagement was announced in 1965, despite strong anti-German feelings among the Dutch population because of the Second World War. Princess Beatrix first met Claus von Amsberg on New Year’s Eve 1962 in Bad Driburg at a dinner hosted by the Count von Oeynhausen-Sierstorpff. Since 2002, she has had to say goodbye to her husband Prince Claus, her parents Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard, her son Prince Friso and now her sister.
